Abstract:
International sports events are important occasions to show the national image of a country and foster the spirit of sports all around the world. As an international university sports event held in China in 2023, Chengdu Universiade serves as an important opportunity to show Chengdu city culture and China’s national image. This paper makes an empirical study on the empathic communication practice of Chengdu Universiade through media videos from different platforms. It is found that the Chengdu Universiade aims to communicate the comprehensive national image of “master self ” in domestic communication field and “guest self ” in international communication field, restrain the centralization deviation, and form the affinity of international sports communication with openness, confidence and humility. Based on the analysis of the international communication practice of the Universiade, this paper believes that different participants in the Universiade realized local empathy through multiple mechanisms from internal to external. Cloud video technology with digital media content built the network empathy space. The Universiade Village builds community emotions with common interests and joint participation. The community gathers diverse emotions by shaping common ideas. During the Universiade, Chengdu city drove cross-cultural communication with cultural symbols, assisted mass communication with precise targeting, promoted altruistic cultural access, and spread the concept of co-existence in the international community through the online and offline communication of international college athletes.
